I attended my first New Orleans style boil this weekend. When Larisa and JP host a party, they definitely do it well. The crab and corn (which was on fire) were my favorites. There was fried goodness as well which included hush puppies (fried cornbread) and fried catfish. We all gathered around, no plates, just our hands and dug right in (cracking crab with bare hands demo shown above). Did I mention there was an endless supply of Miller Genuine Draft?

Unfortunately, I cannot dine at one of my favorite Italian restaurants anymore. Food is great, and wait staff is amazing. When they did not credit my opentable.com reservation (worth 1000 pts), I tried to resolve by contacting them by sending a copy of my receipt. Basically it came down to me being late (I totally own up to that) but they were absolutely rude about it. They said it was my fault not theirs (yes they said this in an email-see below) and offered me a reservation for tonight at 5:30. I simply told them I was not interested (so he called me rude, again see below).

Here is the email from Neal (whoever that is and he was also pretty condescending on the phone)

One of the last things I did before leaving Philips, was buy a new TV. Every TV I've had in the past, has been a hand-me-down. I hate spending money on stuff like this but I also had some points (a work thing) so I got quite a hefty discount. It's a 32" 5000 series, HDTV. Lost and 24 never looked so better.

I may even host a Super Bowl party. I don't even like football (not even sure who is playing-it's tomorrow). Maybe I'll call it, a Super Bowl Commercials party.

Holidays 2008

You know you're entering a good decade in your life when you can look at the people in your life and know that they will always be there, that not much changes and that they surprise the living crap out of you when you least expect it.

My first gathering was getting my Oakland friends together. It was so good to see everyone again and it felt so familiar, so fun. We'll do it again the next time I'm in town. Yeah for Facebook!

Second gathering was the family brunch and ice cream sundaes at Fentons. This was a first for us but it worked out really well. I can't believe how much our family has grown and how old the kiddies are!

Third gathering was my (sort of) surprise birthday part at Craftbar in New York. I was visiting with my friend Kimberly and I found 5 of my Atlanta friends there at the bar waiting for me to surprise me. I was floored and couldn't believe it. This was probably the best New Years yet. Thanks for making the trek, Marie, Krystin, Mike, Tony and Diane. (We missed you Chap-thanks for dinner at Top Floor). Special thanks to Mike and Kimberly for being the sneaky ones.

I am so thankful for the people in my life (and of course my dog). It really is special when you can look at the faces and know the strength, beauty and love each person has. Money can't by friendships. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Clear Card success

Got through Atlanta, SFO and LaGuardia with no problems. SFO and NY concierges take you right to the front. Atlanta could use a little more customer service-you only get through the security line but still have to wait like everyone else to put your crap in bins. Other than that, I think it's a great service and well worth the money. I also barely made it to New York so my late self is definitely thankful.

I am flying to San Francisco from Atlanta tomorrow. And since Atlanta has some of the worst security lines in the country (also is the busiest airport in the world), I am hoping to cruise right through. This Clear card membership lasts for one year. If it works, it will be well worth it, even if I do only take a few trips a year.

However, I will get to the airport 2 hours before departure-force of habit.

I am thankful for family, Dixie, my home, health, job, the list goes on.

And I am thankful for friends-all of my friends but specifically Mike, Krystin and Tony. We had dinner together last night at Room which is a restaurant at a hotel here in Atlanta. We enjoyed a nice turkey buffet with all of the trimmings. I think we all went back at least 3 times. Dinner was good and drinks at The Bureau after was even better. Bram joined us for pool, Cheezit's and beer. Definitely nice to not have to travel or cook and to enjoy a nice relaxed evening with good friends.

Oh, I also need to give props to Krystin for getting our money back from the game because of our seat debacle. So the game was free which made paying for last nights dinner, even sweeter.

My first college football game

This may have been one of the most expensive things I've done in a long time but it was worth it. Not that I care for football but since I've been here, I really needed to find out what this whole southern cultural phenomenon is about. People in the south love their college football. I went to a school that had no football (rather they did until the students voted to get rid of the program - I was part of that vote). Although I can't say I fully understand why people get so excited, I can at least see they have a good time and are devoted, loyal fans.

I went to the Georgia Tech game against Miami. We were in the Miami section because Krystin is an alumni. We had decent seats but ended up moving up higher to see more. GT won which from what I understand, was a feat in itself. No offense to those who are loyal to GT but from what I understand, the track record speaks for itself. For me the best part was wearing 5 layers of clothing and eating a plain hot dog. Oh, it took me 2 hours to get to Octane that night to meet with my friends. How stupid was that.

I should be saving money. I do but I should have more in savings than I do. And eventhough my spending has definitely been reduced to somewhat of a minimum (my minimum is probably most people's maximum: I do it within my means except for the Fendi fart from last week), I have purchased a few items for the fall. And since I'm behind on the photos, I'll list here. These are from the past few weeks.

Veer also produced Helvetica, a documentary on the history of the font. For you creatives out there, it's a great film. For people like my friend Melanie who dog sat for me about a month ago, not so much. Poor girl was at my house hoping to watch some good chick flick and all I had was a DVD on type. Sorry Mel, will do better next time.

I went to a party on saturday night with my friend Chap. It was for his friend Joel (I won't even say what the party was for), at his brothers' house. We were also there at night so it was even better, all lit up. Eventhough we did have to drive all the way up exit 7B and beyond, the party was a lot of fun. We didn't leave until after 3am (I was surprised I still had it in me). We had a good time. And the wine cellar, my favorite part of the house.

Same crew as the last but different food items. Apps were bacon and peas, fish sticks and dinner was pasta carbonara with some sort of quail egg that you mix in. I think I'm in love. The food was so good, I was dreaming about it the next day. Let's not even go there with the fat and calorie content.

After dinner we went next door and had cocktails at Eugene. Same owner as H&F but on the expensive side. Our new friend Braham, treated us to a round of drinks (I think 20 year scotch and top shelf cognac was involved - I had neither of those). I had some sort of port or rendition of a port mixed by Nate the bartender. Very tasty.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. It's been a bit busy here. The rain certainly does not help. All I want to do is watch reruns of The Hills and Project Runway all day. But fall is coming so get ready for some fun stuff soon. I know I can't wait to buy a new pair of boots.

My first meal was at Dave and Linda's wedding. I could have eaten about ten more crab legs.

My first meal post wedding, was at Bettye's Diner with Mom and Duke. This must be noted as anyone who knows Duke, knows that he is a tough customer. I believe that the meal at Bettye's Diner, was "very good". Yes, people, not "ok", but very good. In the past seven or so years that I've known him, I've never heard him be happy with a meal. This is a momentous occasion.

My next meal to note was with cousins Kristin, Courtney and sis, Mimi. We went to the Triangle in SF. The Triangle. I haven't been there since I was in my early twenties. There is a reason why you don't go there beyond your early twenties. You either end up at the "Cougar" bar (where we were), or at one of the others where "scene" is defined by drunk beautiful people. We also had dinner at Betelnut (another place I haven't been to in what seems like decades), and had a very good meal there. Mimi is now a vegetarian. Who knew? More meat for the three of us. Thanks for organizing, Courtney.. good times.

Kristin, where are the kiddies?

Final meal to be noted (though I ate out every meal) was the one with Kala and Bern at Citron in Oakland. Our goal was to have a glass of wine and a small meal. Before we knew it, our table was covered with plates and excellent conversation. I have never met Kala's husband Bern. I have to say, he is one of my favorite optometrists and forty year olds. Coke is the number one company (best brands) listed by Interbrand in 2007. I am not a fan of soda but I do admire their branding and thanks to Todd, may start taking a closer look at some of their cans and bottles. It doesn't hurt that they are also headquartered here in Atlanta.

Got a new "camera bag" yesterday. Ok it's a new handbag but I hate camera bags and this one actually fits my camera, lens (key is easy to put in/take out) and kindle. All of this will go on my next trip to San Francisco in August.

Double Cheese Burger

Last night Mike, Krystin, Chap, Tony and I went to Holeman and Finch. It's a restaurant/bar where it's first come first serve. No reservations, sit as long as you want without anyone trying to push you out. They have a great assortment of food and drinks. We sat at the bar and had of course, our usual outstanding conversation (I don't think I called Mike an asshole once last night). We started out with the cured plate, fish sticks and I had a greyhound (grapefruit juice and vodka). Here's their schtick. They serve food but they don't start serving the burger until 10pm. Once they run out (who really runs out of burgers?), they're done. So luckily after Krystin snaked a table for us (little Krystin vs. 6 hungry, loud sorority girls-go k), we were able to order our rounds of wine and eat our burger. I have to say, it was quite good. I don't know if it's the anticipation and 3 drinks beforehand, but it was good. It wasn't the best, but there were definitely 5 clean plates at the end.

So why am I sharing this? I guess, even I am subject to the every day, marketing ploy (as much as I'd like to think I don't fall for that). The mere idea that you have to get it while it's good and once it's gone, it's gone makes me think "I must have one"! So I happily passed on my ten bucks (plus a lot more for drinks) and can say that I had a good time, despite the Buckhead crowd. Thank you my friends, for making dinner fun, paying the tab easy and as always, drinking more than me.

I love reading. I used to love buying books. There was a time when I looked at my bookshelf with all of my books and felt a sense of accomplishment. People would come over and look at my bookshelf, as they were looking into the person I am. I'm over it.. dust and all. I'm going digital (as I have with my music-haven't bought an actual CD in ages). I realize I won't be able to read everything on my new Kindle but I love that I can download instantly, anywhere.

I think about 50% of my wardrobe is black or grey-now it's 51%. New shirt from the Fall collection (a little boring, in my opinion). I wouldn't layer it like they did in the image above (from Gap website). I'd wear it so it looks street.

Got these for a wedding I need to attend this summer. Pewter is the new black. Not really but I always think that black heels look heavy for a summer day wedding. I think these will work with about anything. I can probably even dance in these.. watch out Macarena, here I come.
